Choosing A DesignGen Tool And Operation
DesignGen advertises 22 grouped tools plus 6 standalone tools. Every grouped tool call passes an `operation` argument; this page is the quick map for picking the right one.
Call shape
Every grouped tool takes `{ "operation": "<op>", ...fields }`. `user_intent` is an optional one-sentence summary of what the user wants.
- Pick the tool family first, then the operation inside it. Each description lists the operations, their required fields, and which sibling tool to use instead.
- An unknown or missing operation returns code unknown_operation with a validOperations list: read it and retry rather than guessing again.
- A result may include nextCall: { toolName, arguments }. Call it exactly as given; it always names an advertised tool.
Grouped tools at a glance
Match the request to one row, then check that tool’s runtime description for its operations.
- designgen_account: plan, credits, cost quotes, usage. Start here.
- designgen_generate: new artwork. designgen_generation: poll it. designgen_edit: change existing artwork (edits, background, upscale, vectorize, halftone, layers, revisions).
- designgen_print_prep: preflight (free check), print_file (verified production file at a size), prepare (quick cleanup), knockouts.

Pairs agents confuse
These look alike but do different jobs.
- designgen_print_prep print_file (production file at a size) vs prepare (quick cleanup) vs preflight (free check, no changes).
- designgen_orders (order prints for the user or a customer) vs designgen_marketplace orders (buyers’ purchases from the user’s shop).
- designgen_proofs (customer approves on a proof page) vs designgen_files share (view-only link).
- designgen_generate (one image) vs designgen_carousel (multi-slide set) vs designgen_video (motion).
- designgen_brand with an explicit brandId (one customer’s kit) vs switch_active (changes the account default for everything).
Sessions and write gates agents miss
Several operations fail validation or get held for approval in ways that are not obvious from the name alone.
- designgen_mockup generate, generate_enhanced, generate_applied, edit, and edit_original, and designgen_files upload, require an existing sessionId.
- designgen_generate operation creative and designgen_creative_session operations fetch/copy require an existing sessionId. designgen_generate operation image creates a session automatically.
- designgen_brand operations profile and workspace, and designgen_brand_assets/designgen_brand_knowledge operation get, take an action argument and are write-gated under the default policy, even though they sound like reads.
- The active brand is not applied to designgen_generate operation image: pass a logo or other exact source artwork via referenceImages (role logo, product, style, layout, background, or reference), or use operation reference.
